AT&T to Buy Lumen’s Home Fiber Business: What You Need to Know
AT&T is making a massive $5.75 billion move to bring its brand to millions of new customers. The company recently announced an agreement to buy the “mass market” (residential and small business) fiber division from Lumen Technologies.
What does this mean for customers?
If you live in one of the 11 states included in the deal—such as Colorado, Arizona, Minnesota, or Washington—your home internet might soon be powered by AT&T. The deal includes Lumen’s “Quantum Fiber” service, which currently serves about one million subscribers and passes by four million homes and businesses in cities like Denver, Phoenix, and Seattle.
AT&T’s goal is to become the nation’s top provider of high-speed fiber internet. By acquiring these existing networks, they can reach more people faster. AT&T’s leadership believes that by offering both 5G cell phone service and home fiber internet as a package deal, they can provide a more reliable, “all-in-one” connection for families.
Why is Lumen selling?
While AT&T is focused on growing its home internet footprint, Lumen Technologies is headed in a different direction. Lumen plans to use the money from this sale to pay off billions of dollars in debt. This will allow them to focus entirely on their “enterprise” business—providing specialized, high-tech networking and AI tools to large corporations and government agencies.
What’s next?
Don’t expect changes overnight. The deal is currently waiting for approval from government regulators and isn’t expected to officially close until the first half of 2026. For now, current Quantum Fiber customers will continue to receive service as usual.
