Digital Navigator - Southern Iowa

Reports to: Curtis Dean, Executive Director

Do you believe that ubiquitous broadband access and adoption is critical to Iowa’s future? Are you a natural educator and collaborator who feels comfortable teaching basic computer skills to adults? 

The Community Broadband Action Network (CBAN) is seeking a full or part-time Digital Navigator to provide individualized and small group assistance to rural Iowans in identified communities who need internet-capable device acquisition and support and/or coaching in introductory digital skills in order to become effective home internet users. This assistance is provided in person and by telephone, but may also include email, text, video chat, and other communication methods that work for the learner.

The Digital Navigator is an office-from-home position, currently grant-funded through September 30, 2025.

What makes a successful Digital Navigator?

  • Ability to embrace the challenge of learning and teaching basic technological concepts related to internet services, computer and device characteristics, and common online services and applications.
  • Has a reliable home internet connection and cellular phone signal strength suitable to provide high-quality one-on-one training.
  • Excellent self-organization, language capacity, and cultural competency.
  • Excellent telephone and online communication skills, including the ability to establish trust with clients of varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, empathy, and a sense of humor in working with diverse customers, coworkers, and community.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems, and negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service during normal work hours during the week, with the ability to flexibly self-schedule client training in late afternoons, evenings, and weekends upon mutual scheduling preference.
  • Establish appropriate boundaries with clients and demonstrate innovation and flexibility.

Who we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, communications, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ professional experience in one or more of these areas: digital equity and inclusion, education and training, community development, planning, project management, public-private partnerships.
  • Comfortable working with and teaching about computers, tablets, web browsers, curating online resources, etc. in a one-on-one setting
  • Demonstrable competency with productivity tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and similar
  • Knowledge of non-profit, governmental or quasi-governmental agencies

  • Ability to travel overnight occasionally.
  • Demonstrable dedicated workspace, in your home or elsewhere. 

Some things about the work

  • The Digital Navigator’s work is performed from their home office and in the field.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and/or use of computer.
  • The potential need to occasionally lift, pull and move up to 15 lbs.
  • You’ll need a valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle.
